Steel Tongue Drum: Connecting with the Oceans Rhythm

4 min read

Today, I found myself drawn to the ocean, the place where my soul felt as if it needed to find some inner peace. There was just a special majestic type of feel today. The last few days have been stormy, so the beaches were still emptied. As I walked along the shoreline, the salty breeze moved through my hair, and the rhythmic sound of the waves echoed the heartbeat of the earth. There’s something incredibly healing about the beach. The way the sky mirrors the sand, a sanctuary where time slows, and everything else fades away.

I brought my steel tongue drum with me, feeling called to bring its vibrations along with the song of the sea. Sitting on some cold wet grass that sat straight across from the waves, I closed my eyes, letting my fingers dance across its surface. This was my first time playing here and this was the most therapeutic playing I have done in a very long time. It was as if the ocean itself was harmonizing with my music, creating a symphony that resonated deep within me.

In that moment, I felt truly connected again, and not just to the earth, but to something bigger than myself. The steel tongue drum’s soothing tones opened my heart, allowing healing energy to flow through me. It was a reminder that even amidst life’s storms, we can find stillness and harmony within.

After playing for a while, and it was time to go. Whenever I spend time in nature, it is a call to leave an offering for Mother Earth and the Ancestors who walked before us. While leaving I had realized I did not have anything on me. Not even a rock to leave. I had seen an old Copenhagen lid, so I picked it up right away and let them know I was sorry for not having something to leave, but I would take the trash as an exchange instead.

In my thoughts, I hear “you’ll receive a gift”, I thought more into it that I did not need a gift, I was doing as I should. I neared my car and as I approached a rock caught my eye. I picked it up and to my surprise it was a fossilized clam that had certain minerals embedded where it sparkled like glitter. At that moment I was reminded that they deliver in many ways.

Holding the fossilized clam in my hand, I felt a deep sense of awe and appreciation. It was more than just a shell; it was a piece of history, a symbol of transformation and endurance. It served as a beautiful reminder that even through the pressures of time and change, we emerge as something stronger, something eternal.

In ancient mythology, clams and shells are often linked to the divine feminine, intuition, and the mysteries of the ocean. They’re also connected to rebirth and transformation, emerging from the depths as something beautiful and enduring. Something so fitting for these times that we have been in, and the things that have been being talked about throughout the spiritual communities.

If you’re feeling called to explore this musical journey, I highly recommend experiencing the magic of a steel tongue drum for yourself. Its intuitive design makes it perfect for beginners and seasoned musicians alike. Not only does it create beautiful sounds, but it also serves as a powerful tool for meditation and emotional healing.

My intention is to help guide others back into that relationship—so we may reflect on our own journeys, reconnect with the land, and remember what it means to be in harmony with ourselves and the Earth.
